此為維多利亞時期（19世紀）英國詩人威廉亨利（Willaim Ernest Henley, 1849-1903）的名篇。作者從小體弱多病，患有肺結核症，一隻腳被截掉；為了保住另一隻腳，他一生都奮力和病魔抗爭，不向命運屈服。"Invictus，拉丁語（=unconquerable），“不可征服”之意。此詩是詩人在病榻上所作。
前南非總統納爾遜·曼德拉的傳記片《成事在人》即將公映。外界認為，此片將衝擊奧斯卡獎。《成事在人》的片名由原來的工作用名“The Human Factor2”改為了“Invictus”--- 該片導演克林特·伊斯特伍德取自曼德拉經常背誦的一首短詩《Invictus》，由William Ernest Henley創作，主題是有關“面對災難時爭取生存”。
影片根據約翰·卡林的作品《與敵人戰鬥：納爾遜曼德拉和一場改變國家的比賽》（Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation）改編，編劇是安東尼·佩卡姆。講述了曼德拉的一段政治經歷。曼德拉成功競選總統一職後，南非被選為1995年橄欖球世界盃東道主。曼德拉決定支援南非的橄欖球隊跳羚隊。跳羚隊的隊員都是白人，以前因南非實行種族隔離制度而被國際賽事拒之門外。大部分黑人一向將跳羚隊視為種族隔離制度的符號。但當跳羚隊在加時賽打敗紐西蘭隊，贏得世界盃冠軍時，黑人與白人的隔膜隨之消失。皮爾納是當時的橄欖球隊長，在世界盃舉辦過程中與曼德拉結下了深厚的友誼，曼德拉還親自給皮納爾頒發獎盃。
