受兩個吸電子的酯基影響，DEAD 的 N=N 雙鍵親電性很強，十分容易斷裂。
2 DEAD 也可作為親雙烯體與共軛雙烯發生 Diels-Alder反應，生成[4+2]加成物。如果雙烯組分為芳基乙烯，則可用於並環四氫噠嗪的合成。產生的加成物也可通過用鹼水解，脫羧，用氯化銅氧化為偶氮化合物，以及用鹼處理，最後轉化為縮環產物。
