歌曲的故事：在上世紀，樂隊主唱Rivers Cuomo於哈佛進修時，收到一封來自一日本女冬粉的信。Rivers因此而愛上了那位女冬粉。但在那個通信交通還不發達的年代，兩人無法見面。朝朝暮暮的思念，使Rivers寫下《Across the sea》。即使後來樂隊好幾次在日本舉辦演唱會，但兩人素未謀面。最終，他們也沒有相見沒有相戀。有人問，那女生知道這歌是寫給她的嗎？Rivers說，部分歌詞摘自她的信中內容，她定能知曉。Rivers亦說：即使我能見到她，但她仍如我所想，一副小女生的模樣，甚至還不會說英文。有趣的是，數年後，Rivers聚了一位日本女子。
樂隊較小眾，不大有名氣，加上這首歌的曲風亦無十分獨特之處，因而鮮為人知。歌曲背後的故事，使它有了一種說不出的美好。
