Analysis of focal-shift effect in planar metallic nanoslit lenses

A theoretical analysis based on scalar diffraction theory about the recently reported focal-shift phenomena in planar metallic nanoslit lenses is presented. Under Fresnel approximation, an axial intensity formula is obtained, which is used to analyze the focal performance in the far field zone of lens. The relative focal shift is totally dependent on the Fresnel number only. The influences of the lens size, preset focal length and incident wavelength can be attributed to the change of Fresnel number. The total phase difference of the lens is approximately equal to the Fresnel number multiplied by pi. Numerical simulations performed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and near-far field transformation method are in agreement with the theoretical analysis. Using the theoretical formula assisted by simple numerical method, we provide predictions on the focal shift for the previous literatures.

We propose a binary plasmonic lens based on metallic nanoslit array with different fillings. The phase range of pi is achieved by changing the refractive indices of the filling materials in the slits. These index-modulated slits are demonstrated to have unique advantages in phase delay compared with the width-modulated ones. The proposed binary structures can keep the advantage in phase modulation and reduce the difficulty in fabrication. Lenses with different functions, such as focusing light to one or two points or correcting oblique incident light, are designed by a simulated annealing algorithm and investigated by the finite-difference time-domain method.

We propose a metal gap superlattice that can decrease the group velocity of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with a large normalized delay bandwidth product (NDBP) and small high-order dispersion. The length of the superlattice is only 8.60 mu m and the transmission is 0.4. The multiple reflections of photons in the nanocavity result in slow SPP group velocity. The numerical analysis exploiting the transfer matrix method (TMM) is confirmed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulations. In addition, we also analyze the reason for pulse deformation.

We demonstrate single band upconversion spectra of Er3+ and Yb3+ codoped ZrO2 nanocrystals. Ratios of green to red emission in Er3+ doped ZrO2 and red to green emission in Er3+/Yb3+ codoped ZrO2 are 8 and 10, respectively. Rate equations for rare earth energy level populations are used to investigate the upconversion mechanisms on the basis of the upconversion intensity dependences of pump power. Excited state absorption and energy transfer are the dominant processes in Er3+ doped and Er3+/Yb3+ codoped ZrO2, respectively.

An analysis of the intense blue upconversion emission at 476 and 488 nm in Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped Y2O3 under excitation power density of 86.7 W/cm(2) available from a diode laser emitting at 976 nm, has been undertaken. Fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) variation of temperature-sensitive blue upconversion emission at 476 and 488 nm in this material was recorded in the temperature range from 303 to 753 K. The maximum sensitivity derived from the FIR technique of the blue upconversion emission is approximately 0.0035 K-1. The results imply that Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped Y2O3 is a potential candidate for the optical temperature sensor.

We expand the degenerate PO pump-probe technique to nondegenerate field and use it to investigate optical nonlinear dynamics in ZnS single crystal. Excited by 532-nm laser pulses with 21-ps duration, the temporal response of nondegenerate nonlinear absorption and nondegenerate nonlinear refraction are probed by laser pulses from optical parameter generation (OPG) at 600 and 680 nm with pulse width of 10 ps. Based on the theory of free-carrier optical nonlinearity, we study the pure free-carrier refraction in ZnS. By numerically fitting based on the nondegenerate pump-probe theory, the nondegenerate two-photon absorption coefficient, the free-carrier lifetime, the free-carrier absorptive cross section and refractive coefficient at both probe wavelengths are determined respectively. The dispersion of the free-carrier refractive coefficients is discussed.

Efficient Er3+:Y2O3 phosphor is synthesized by the sol-gel method. Rate equations for Er3+ energy level populations are used to investigate pump power and temperature dependences of upconversion intensity as well as the fluorescence decay profiles. Excited state absorption cross section of Er3+ I-4(13/2) of 6.8 x 10(-27) m(2) and cross relaxation rate of 6200 s(-1) are determined from comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental data. In addition, it is found that effect of temperature on the phonon-assistant absorption cannot be neglected. This work provides references for the prediction of the upconversion behavior in Er3+ singly doped matrix.

Nonlinear absorption of carbon disulfide (CS2) was investigated by Z-scan technique and time-resolved pump-probe technique with femtosecond pulses at 400 nm wavelength. By the two techniques, we confirmed that the nonlinear absorption of CS2 arise from a combination of two-photon absorption (TPA) and the excited state absorption induced by TPA under the incident laser pulses with 400 nm wavelength. The coefficient of TPA, the absorption cross-section of low excited state and lifetime of low excited state were obtained by theoretical fitting the experimental results. The results indicated that the CS2 has good optical limiting capability at 400 nm wavelength.

In this letter, we demonstrate for the first time a growth of monoclinic phase ZrO2 nanocrytals based on a sol-gel method, compared to the ordinary sol-gel procedure, our method decreases the synthesized temperature from similar to 1000 degrees C to similar to 800 degrees C. In addition, it is found that Er3+ in monoclinic phase ZrO2 nanocrystals have greatly enhanced upconversion emissions under infrared LD excitation due to its lower environmental symmetry.

We studied the optical bistability of subwavelength metallic film coated by Kerr dielectric gratings numerically. It is found that the effect of optical bistability in the structure is explained by the excitations of the coupled surface plasmon polaritons at the coated metallic films. The effect of thickness of the metallic films on bistability loop is analyzed in detail, and the authors attribute the change of the bistability loop to the lifetime of the coupled surface plasmon polaritons.
