在失敗的《Hot Space》專輯之後，Queen 樂隊重現調整了音樂的方向，去掉了做作的 Disco 風格。 Queen 的80年代最佳專輯 《The Works》在團員屢起勃溪之下，於八四年出版。也許是風雨不斷的緣故，本作有著缺乏已久的整體張力和深度。 Deacon 的 "I Want to Break Free" 似乎反映了團員們的心境； Mercury 的 "Keep Passing the Open Windows" (標題出自 John Irving 的小說) 和 "It's a Hard Life" (開頭借用 Leoncavallo 的歌劇「丑角」) 則在活力四射中充滿內省。 Taylor打頭陣的單曲 "Radio Ga Ga" 靈感得自 MTV，曲中說：「你輝煌過，曾經擁有力量，而你的巔峰尚未來到 ("You had your time, you had the power, you've yet to have your finest hour")。」表面上當然是以收音機和 MTV 對比，但未嘗不可看作對身處新浪潮時代的自我期許。
