Anecdote of the Jar

I placed a jar in Tennessee,
And round it was, upon a hill,
It made the slovenly wilderness
Surround that hill.
The wilderness rose up to it,
And sprawled around, no longer wild,
The jar was round upon the ground
And tall and of a port in air.
It took dominion everywhere,
The jar was gray and bare,
It did not give of bird or bush,
Like nothing else in Tennessee.

作者簡介
華萊士·史蒂文斯(Wallace Stevens，1879年10月2日 - 1955年8月2日)，美國著名現代詩人，出生於美國賓夕法尼亞州的雷丁市。大學時就讀於哈佛，後在紐約法學院獲法律學位。1904 年取得律師資格後，在康乃狄克州就業於哈特福德意外事故保險公司，1934 年就任副總裁。在1955年，他獲得了普利茲詩歌獎。代表作有《冰激凌皇帝》等。
