早年經歷
奈傑爾·霍桑1929年出生於英格蘭的考文垂，其母為艾格尼絲·羅斯瑪麗，其父為查爾斯·巴納德·霍桑，一位醫生。他在南非長大並且其間就讀於開普敦的聖喬治文法學校和那裡的基督教兄弟學院。他被開普敦大學錄取但是後來退學，並在二十世紀五十年代返回英國開始了他的表演生涯。
演藝經歷
奈傑爾·霍桑於50-80年代的工作是出演舞台劇。他在80年代出演BBC電視台的電視劇是，大臣(Yes Minister)里的Humphrey Appleby爵士，這一角色為他贏得了國際聲望。而後他出演由舞台劇改編的電影喬治王的瘋狂(The Madness of King George)，讓他獲得了奧斯卡最佳男主角的提名。
個人生活
奈傑爾·霍桑不願過多談論自己的私生活，1995年參加奧斯卡頒獎典禮時，不滿公眾關注他在1992年公開同性戀身份的事。但是，他和他的長期伴侶Trevor Bentham一起出席了那屆典禮，並且在接受媒體採訪時談論此事，而在他死後出版的自傳《繃著臉》(Straight Face)也有記錄。
人物去世
霍桑在接受了幾次胰腺癌手術後，死於術後併發症-心臟病，享年72歲。他被葬於英國赫特福德的一個教堂。
