2000年,他所帶領的科研小組率先在國內建立了人類白細胞抗原(HLA)基因的測序分型技術(Sequence Based Typing,SBT),並利用該項技術,系統、精確的研究了中國南方人群的HLA遺傳多態性,發現了大量以前從未在中國人群中出現過的等位基因,從而清晰的勾勒出了HLA遺傳多態性在中國不同民族、地域的分布差異和規律。同時,率先在國際上公布了在中國人群中特有的8種HLA新等位基因。
