在宇宙起源研究中，最初的起源，大爆炸一瞬間前的那一點稱之為“SINGULARITY”，也就是“奇點”。

BBC的一部紀錄片裡有提到大爆炸的部分研究歷程：“……第一個問題隨著“大爆炸”產生了：宇宙學家們曾經假設，隨著時間倒退，所有的都能最終回到大爆炸的開始時，應該不會有棘手的間隙的，然而經過幾年無止境的細化，還是有個間隙無法消除，最重要的一點是:雖然我們稱它為大爆炸理論，但它根本沒有解釋大爆炸是什麼，它沒有告訴我們為什麼爆炸，什麼引起了爆炸，它也沒有描述那過程，讓我們沒法預測大爆炸後瞬間的情形。……大爆炸的起點，就是在整個宇宙哲學中獨特的一個最大的奧秘，它被稱為奇點（the very begining of the Big Bang,which the single biggest mystery in all of the cosmology,it was called the Singularity）。”
此處物理學家ALAN GUTH和加來道雄談到singularity所帶來的問題時，這樣說
ALAN GUTH:Inspect the fact that we call it the "Big Bang theory",uh,it really says absolutely nothing about the Big Bang,uh,it doesn't tell us what bang,why bang,what cause it to bang.uh,It doesn't even describe,it doesn't really allow us to predict what the condition are really after this bang.
