1987年春天，墨丘利（Freddie Mercury）被診斷出患有愛滋病，儘管他對公眾隱瞞了自己的病情，並否認了許多媒體關於他病情嚴重的報導。樂隊和製作人的目標是11月或12月的發行日期，以趕上關鍵的聖誕節市場，但水星的健康狀況下降意味著專輯的發行直到1991年2月才舉行。
