主辦組織及贊助機構
宇宙基金會（Cosmos Foundation）是航天基金會（Space Foundation）全資開設的致力於以可持續發展教育與航天航空教育為主的青少年科學技術教育機構。美國國家航空航天局（National Aeronautics and Space Administration）是美國負責太空計畫的政府機構。

中國學生如何參加
報名時為高年級（即9—12年級的初三、高一、高二、高三學生），並擁有獨立科學研究成果的學生可以參加中國區選拔。國內選拔參賽者需要完成網上材料投遞申報。國際決賽參賽者需要完成基礎申報、安全性檢查申報、人類倫理審查申報、研究無虐待動物審查申報、指導教師責任申報、成人項目監督者責任申報等網路申報程式。集體項目參賽人數為兩人（實際上最多有三人能夠獲獎，第3人需要自己承擔全部比賽費用），個人項目參賽人數為一人，每個項目（包括個人項目與集體項目）的指導教師為一人。
中國區選拔已將國內主要的青少年科學競賽作為聯繫賽事（分別是英特爾全國青少年科技創新大賽、明天小小科學家獎勵活動等）。同時每年十一月舉辦中國區選拔。經過中國區選拔的參賽項目將上報國際競賽委員會複審，國際複審通過後即可辦理簽證，在獲得簽證並簽訂採訪許可、肖像權使用許可、參賽協定之後即可赴美參加國際決賽。
參賽項目類別
能源(ENERGY)
包括可再生能源研究、生物能源研究、不可再生能源研究、能源政策研究、清潔能源技術研發、能源效率研究、能源節約技術研發等。
工程(ENGINEERING)
包括生物工程研究、土木工程研究、機械工程研究、工業工程研究、材料工程研究、電氣工程研究、計算機工程研究等。
環境(ENVIRONMENT)
包括土地管理研究、生態系統管理研究、生物修復技術研發、空氣污染對策研究及空氣品質研究、土壤污染對策研究及土地質量研究、水污染對策研究及水質量研究、減少-回收-再利用3R研究。

2008年9月，中國科學技術協會青少年科技活動中心接到I-SWEEEP組委會的組隊參賽邀請。

2012年
中國科協分隊
2012年“國際能源、工程、環境可持續發展項目奧林匹克競賽（I-SWEEEP）”於5月2日—6日在美國德克薩斯州休斯頓市的GRB會展中心舉行。由中國科協青少年科技中心組團，王松光處長為團長的中國代表團一行六人參加了本次比賽。這是中國科協選拔的青少年選手第三次參加本項賽事，中國隊共有三個參賽項目中，湖南省的團體項目獲得工程學金獎，安徽省個人項目獲得環境學科銀獎，湖南省個人項目獲得工程學科提名獎，他們共獲得1000美元的獎金。
