《窈窕淑女》是一部不朽的音樂劇，它最成功的地方在於其中的歌曲建立起主角人物鮮明的性格和彼此間的關係，於1953年3月15日首演於紐約馬克赫林格劇院，在百老匯連演了近10年，共上演2717場，成為50年代最為膾炙人口的音樂劇。《窈窕淑女》的唱片銷量高達500萬張，還獲得包括最佳音樂劇獎在內的托尼獎6項大獎和3項提名。劇本的原著來自於蕭伯納1914年的戲劇《皮格馬利翁》，當初大文豪創作時就是想以一種諷刺的眼光講述一個“灰姑娘”的故事。
“亨利.希金斯（Henry Higgins）是一名固執傲慢的語言學教授。有一天他遇到了言語粗俗的賣花女伊莉莎.多莉特（Eliza Doolittle），告訴她一個人的語音標誌著這個人的社會地位，如果她改進發音就可能會有一份體面的工作。教授回家後，遇到了同行皮克林（Pickering）上校，他告訴上校他能在六個月內把一個下層社會的女子培養成為上流社會的淑女。上校與教授打賭此事不可能。第二天恰好伊莉莎來了，在上校的幫助下，她成了教授的學生。經過刻苦學習，她取得了巨大進步，變得談吐高雅、儀態端莊。最後在一次大型舞會上，她被介紹給上層社會，贏得了眾人的讚美，並被皇家語音專家認為是某國的公主。教授回家後，興高采烈地向上校索要賭金，完全忽視了伊莉莎，伊莉莎一怒之下，忿然離去。此時若有所失的教授才感到伊莉莎已成為自己生活的一部分。 ”
