本書內容主要選材於國外化學類原版教材和專著，以當今社會最關注的環境、能源、材料、生命科學等問題與化學的聯繫為主線，介紹了化學這門套用相當廣泛的學科與人類社會的密切關係。
全書分為兩大板塊，前一板塊包括緒論和第1，2章，介紹了化學的基本概念、原理、發展歷程、重要的化合物等等，側重化學學科本身；後一板塊包括第3，4，5，6章，主要涉及化學發展與社會進步、化學與日常生活、化學與環境、化學與現代技術，側重與化學相關的學科和領域。每一章節都由相對獨立的文章組成，文後附有重要辭彙和短語註解，並對難度較大的語句給出了參考譯文，以方便讀者較準確了解和掌握化學專業英語辭彙以及科技英語的表達方式。
