青年生涯
曾從事過記者、部委機關、企業負責人等工作。企業管理經驗達15年以上。歷任中國警察協會企業管理辦公室副主任；公安部警安實業總公司處長、副總經理、總經理；中國機電集團公司總經理；中國城市開發公司總經理等。
社會任職
於煉同志是政協十一屆全國委員會委員、團中央中國青年企業家協會七屆、八屆、九屆副會長，中國青年建築房地產委員會首屆主任。中國致公黨中央十二屆、十三屆中央委員會委員、中央海外工作委員會副主任。中國扶貧開發協會第一屆常務理事。中國環境文化促進會第一屆理事、第二屆常務理事。中國文化管理協會本屆副會長。

作為成功的企業家，管理學博士，於煉不但自己酷愛霍金的論著，而且還經常向朋友們力薦。《時間簡史》、《果殼中的世界》等他一般都已讀過三遍，苦苦探尋男人、女人及生命流傳的規則；謳歌命運和自然的美麗，《詩刊》社編輯部楊志學主任寫道“於煉是這樣一個詩人：他沒有去著力描摹外界生活的五光十色，更沒有用詩筆去記錄時代的轟鳴巨響。他甚至有意避著年代的痕跡，努力跨越著時代的局限，寫一些雋永的詩篇。”當寫詩與經營企業相碰撞的時候，對於於煉絲毫不是矛盾，而是更為令他感動的時刻。

於煉現象
於煉是一種現象，一種我從沒見過的現象。他寫詩始於大學時代，十幾年前讀他的詩集《回望中滾落的清純》時就曾激動不已，沒想到十幾年後再見，他卻成為中國頗有影響的企業家，但卻詩心不死，青春依舊，正如自己在詩集《三套車》後記中寫道的一樣：“對你的回憶不管是生鏽的衝動，還是沒血的傷口；不管是永遠的等候，還是青春中的一次季風，我都願意拿起停歇了多年的天藍色的筆，用天空的顏色對過去進行一次過濾。沒有什麼理由，只要走進老闆生涯就可以泯滅純真、背叛浪漫、背叛高雅、而遺忘透明的你；沒有什麼藉口，只要擁有商旅的匆忙，就可以省略真誠省略往昔而不去想過去的蒼茫……
