這個音樂錄影帶的計畫早在歌曲發行之前就開始了！當時在為ArianaGrande的歌曲“breathin”製作音樂視頻的過程中，導演Hannah Lux Davis聽了《thank u, next》的試聽，她在聽完稱讚了這首歌。正因為如此，Hannah Lux Davis和ArianaGrande開始提出視頻的概念，提出他們對《賤女孩》等電影的熱愛並馬上開始了製作。
