頁岩（Shale），頁岩是一種沉積岩，成分複雜，但都具有薄頁狀或薄片層狀的層理，主要是由黏土沉積經擠壓和一定地溫形成的岩石。粘土岩的一種。成分複雜，除粘土礦物外，還含有許多碎屑礦物和自生礦物。具頁狀或薄片狀層理。用硬物擊打易裂成碎片。是由粘土物質經壓實作用、脫水作用、重結晶作用後形成。頁岩抵抗風化的能力弱，在地形上往往因侵蝕形成低山、谷地。頁岩不透水，在地下水分布中往往成為隔水層。
