Adventism起源於19世紀的美國,背景是千禧年主義盛行的時期。Adventism由前美國陸軍軍官威廉·米勒(William Miller, 1782–1849)創立。米勒最初斷言基督將在1844年3月21日前復臨,後將該日期修正為1844年10月22日。預言落空後被稱為“大失望”(The great disappointment)。1845年,復臨信徒召開了一次共同會議。堅持信仰的信徒認為米勒誤解了徵兆,基督已開始“潔淨天上的聖所”,完成此任務後才會顯現。這些米勒派信徒於1863年創立了基督復臨安息日會(Seventh-day Adventists)。其他復臨派團體還包括福音復臨派(Evangelical Adventists)和復臨基督教會(Advent Christian Church)。
