由來
Blackcomb是微軟對Windows未來的版本的代號，原本安排於Windows XP後推出。但是在2001年8月，“Blackcomb”突然宣布延後數年才推出，取而代之由Windows Vista（代號“Longhorn”）在Windows XP之後及Blackcomb之前推出。
微軟為了避免把大眾的注意力從Vista上轉移，微軟起初並沒有透露太多有關下一代Windows的信息；另一方面重組不久的Windows部門也面臨著整頓。直到2009年4月21日預覽版的發布，微軟才開始對這個新系統進行商業宣傳，這個新系統也逐漸開始走進大眾人們的視野中來。
2009年7月14日，Windows 7 7600.16385編譯完成，標誌著Windows 7歷時三年的開發正式完成。目前Windows7正式版本已經發布.
