Mining Science and Safety Technology are very important for the modern society. Theconvening of 2002'International Symposium on Mining Science and Safety Technology (2002ISMSST) provides an international forum for the open exchange of information and ideas inthe field of mining science and safety technology, and an opportunity for mining or safetyprofessionals, enterprise operators, managers, system designers, engineers, technicians ，scientists, academics , consultants and government to meet and review and debate the state-of-the-art in mining science and safety technology. The purpose of 2002'ISMSST is devoteto the development of mining science and the application of methods for the enhancement ofthe safety and reliability of complex technological systems. .Participants from home and abroad present 139 papers covering a diverse range oftopics. I believe that the proceedings will benefit not only the participants of the meeting butalso all of our colleagues engaged in research and development of mining science and safetytechnology. It is also really hoped that the academic exchanges associated with miningscience and safety technology between different countries would be continued andstrengthened after this symposium.I greatly appreciate the opportunity of meeting and interacting with so many dedicatedprofessionals around the world who demonstrate that they care so much about the field, andauthors for providing excellent papers describing their latest achievements in theirresearches.
