Hail, Columbia1798年4月25日在費城一家劇院首次演唱《嗨！哥倫比亞》時，聽眾報以熱烈的掌聲和歡呼。其曲調是套用為華盛頓總統第一次就職典禮而作的《總統進行曲》的曲調。原來的題目為《愛的新聯邦之歌──改編為總統進行曲》，但在一年之內，又重新題名為《嗨！哥倫比亞》。歌的第四節開頭就直接向新當選的約翰·亞當斯總統表示致敬。歌紙上印著亞當斯的頭像，環繞頭像的是這樣一句話：“瞧，這是現在統帥我們的領袖。”反聯邦主義的報紙嘲笑這首歌是吹捧一個主張君主制的政黨，但它很快風靡全國，國人以極大的愛國熱情歡迎它。在1931年胡佛總統宣布《星條旗》為國歌前約一百年里，《嗨！哥倫比亞》與《星條旗》一直競爭當國歌。
