Grammy鄉村歌后Trisha Yearwood是 Georgia 一個知名銀行家的女兒。在90 年代早期她作為一個鄉村歌曲新星發行了一系列登上榜首位置的金曲，其中的第一首就是" She 's in Love with the Boy "。這些單曲和專輯的發行確立了她作為 90 年代最受歡迎的鄉村歌手的地位。

家庭的音樂氛圍對於John Legend日後走向音樂方面產生了重要的作用。John Legend的家裡有一台鋼琴，John Legend從五歲的時候開始就利用這台鋼琴學著練習彈奏歌曲，到了他八九歲的時候就已經開始在當地的一些教堂里為教堂唱詩班彈鋼琴伴奏了，通過奶奶教授給他的一些福音音樂歌曲，不久之後John Legend已經開始獨立的演奏歌曲了，到了高中的時候，John Legend已經開始錄製一些小型唱片了。John Legend後來開始聽一些Jodeci，Boyz II Men，LL Cool J的音樂，這些音樂對於他後來的個人音樂風格也產生了一定的影響。16歲以後，John Legend離開了家鄉來到了賓夕法尼亞大學主修英文專業，在這裡除了學習之外他依然活躍於音樂場合，他經常在學校的一些才藝演出上表演，在費城外的Bethel A.M.E.教堂他已經成為了教堂唱詩班的導演，直到他發片前的幾個月，他在這所教堂擔任唱詩班導演長達九年。

2003年底，Kanye West把表現出色的John Legend正式簽入了自己的唱片公司里並且先後於2003年和2004年初發行了他的現場專輯《Live at SOB's New York City》和《Solo Sessions Vol. 1: Live at the Knitting Factory》。隨著Kanye West首張個人專輯《College Dropout》的成功，John Legend更是受到了Kanye West的進一步發掘
2004年12月28日，在Kanye West的打造下，John Legend的首張錄音室專輯《Get Lifted》正式發行。
