生於加拿大的艾伯塔，成長於洛杉磯。1923年從影，1928年主演《婚禮進行曲》，聲名遠播。1933年出演科幻片《金剛》，令人難以忘懷。1942年和劇作家羅伯特．里斯金結婚後一度退出影壇，直至1953年才再度復出，5年後最終息影。90年代後期曾在電視劇中出演角色。其它主要影片有《戰地飛鴻》、《綠林豪客》、《恐怖窟》、《蠟像陳列所之秘密》、《大破間諜網》、《蜂后》等。
