張貫之，四川劍閣人，西南科技大學副教授；1995年畢業於西華師範大學外語系，獲文學學士學位；1998年畢業於四川大學英文系，獲文學碩士學位；2007年四川大學在讀英語語言文學博士研究生；主要從事英語教學、研究與翻譯工作，出版譯著3本、專著1本，發表多篇學術論文。

《英國英語語調理論發展概貌》試圖簡要地闡述英國英語語調發展演變的這一歷史進程，總結各個時期英語語調研究的重要成果，以引起大家對語調學研究的興趣和重視，特別是引起廣大英語教學工作者對語調教學重要性的認識，克服教學中“重音輕調”和“調型單一”等現象，加強語調理論的研究和學習，增加語調教學在整個教學中的比重，並博取諸長，探索我國英語語調教學的有效途徑和辦法。英國英語語調研究的歷史，可以追溯到16世紀；最初是在討論標點符號時，附帶把語調提出來的。17世紀，Charles Butler首次提出了降調和升調的概念。19世紀，Henry Sweet在其著作’中已使用8種語調符號，被尊稱為近代英語語調研究的鼻祖。20世紀，英語語調研究專家輩出，成果紛呈。Palmer，Armstrong，Ward，Jones，Kingdon，O'Connor，Arnold，Gimson，Halliday，CIystal，Brazil，Cruttenden，Wells等人的文章或專著相繼問世，不同流派的觀點百家爭鳴，語調研究空前活躍，徹底改變了它在語言科學中“灰姑娘”的地位。
