他說：“小時候家裡窮，去放牛時，聽到大人們在練唱，就跟著哼。”馬蘭部落有四五個郭英男的拜把兄弟，以前，大家每天一邊捕魚、種田一邊唱歌、乘涼、練和聲，彼此都有很好的默契。這幾年來，這些老兄弟們相繼去世，郭英男為了讓阿美族的歌聲繼續流傳，開始教自己的妻子、弟弟、妹妹和親戚演唱，組建“馬蘭吟唱隊”。
