梅爾文·達默是個汽車加油站的工人，他心地善良，樂於助人，但卻是個徹頭徹尾的失敗者：背運，不切實際，還丟了工作，老婆也和他離了婚。一天晚上，梅爾文在公路上看到一個步履蹣跚、行動不便的老人，原來老人的機車出了故障，梅爾文便好心讓他搭乘自己的汽車。老人聲稱自己是霍華德·休斯，梅爾文聽說過這個性格古怪的大富翁，但他對此並不相信，只是一笑置之。梅爾文將老人送到了拉斯維加斯，還將自己身上兩角五分錢借給了他。梅爾文沒有想到的是，霍華德·休斯立下了遺囑，將一億五千六百萬美元的財產留給了他。老婆也重新回到了他身邊
