生於洛杉磯。受演員母親影響，6歲時即登台表演。1943年以藝名格洛麗亞·霍爾沃德進入百老匯，第二年進入米高梅影片公司，以《美女熱》走上銀幕。1947年以《殺人犯》獲奧斯卡最佳女配角提名；1952年更以《玉女奇男》榮獲第25屆奧斯卡最佳女配角金像獎。
