。多恩與喬治·赫伯特和安德魯·馬韋爾同屬最偉大的玄學派詩人。他的創作他不僅影響了他同時代的詩人，還影響到艾略特、約翰·克婁·蘭塞姆（John Crowe Ransom,）、愛倫·泰特（Allen Tate）等二十世紀時的詩人。與其他玄學派詩人一樣，多恩的詩作也運用比附比喻（conceits）（精巧、驚人的比喻），也從日常生活和廣博的學識中尋找意象。在玄學派詩人中，他能將強烈的情感和學識上的獨創和練達加以完美結合。作品包括愛情詩、諷刺詩、格言詩、宗教詩以及布道文等。詩歌節奏有力，語言生動，想像奇特而大膽，常使用莎士比亞式的機智的隱喻，這些特點在他的詩集《歌與短歌》中體現得十分明顯。他於1631 年3月31日卒於倫敦。

THE GOOD-MORROW.

I WONDER by my troth, what thou and I
Did, till we loved ? were we not wean'd till then ?
But suck'd on country pleasures, childishly ?
Or snorted we in the Seven Sleepers' den ?
'Twas so ; but this, all pleasures fancies be ;
If ever any beauty I did see,
Which I desired, and got, 'twas but a dream of thee.
And now good-morrow to our waking souls,
Which watch not one another out of fear ;
For love all love of other sights controls,
And makes one little room an everywhere.
Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone ;
Let maps to other, worlds on worlds have shown ;
Let us possess one world ; each hath one, and is one.
My face in thine eye, thine in mine appears,
And true plain hearts do in the faces rest ;
Where can we find two better hemispheres
Without sharp north, without declining west ?
Whatever dies, was not mix'd equally ;
If our two loves be one, or thou and I
love so alike that none can slacken, none can die.
