In novels and short stories, features of spoken language are often represented to a lesser degree in dialogues between fictional characters,in characters, interior monologues and in first-person narration. To illustrate, let us look for evidence from Graham Greene's story The Invisible Japanese Gentlemen.
The story is written in the first person.About half of the story is in narrative which also includes a specimen of interior monologue, the other half,in conversa-tion.On the whole, the language is simple and clear. Most of the words are of Anglo-Saxon origin, even in the narrative part.In the conversation part,we find a large distribution of sentences which are syntactically simple,or incomplete,or minor. There is a frequent use of contracted forms(such as I've,I don't,I haven't etc.)and tag questions. There are also instances of characters interrupting each other and even a case of change of topic when the young man tries in vain to shift the girl's attention from her potential writing career. All this helps to create a linguistic style which resembles informal speech.
In the narrative part, the language is more carefully organized. There are more Latinate words, and sentences become longer and more complicated. There are no contracted for/us or tag questions. However, most of the complicated sentences result from co-ordination (introduced by "but" (five times),"and" (three times)"then" (twice)rather than subordination.
