JMS的特色
主編崔鵬研究員為我國山地災害研究領域的知名專家，44位編委分別來來自5大洲21個國家/地區/國際組織。
本刊所有稿件須通過同行評議後方能發表，同行評議人員均為該領域的專家學者， 其中， 70%以上為中國大陸以外的研究人員。
本刊約50%的稿件來自中國大陸以外的作者的投稿，作者分布在全世界三十多個國家和地區。
本刊於創刊當年即被國際權威二次文獻系統GeoRef收錄，2006年起被Springer文獻資料庫全文收錄，2007年進入科學引文資料庫擴展版（SCI-E。
在全世界專門關注山地研究的期刊中，除國內的《山地學報》《山地科學學報（英文）》外，國外專注于山地科學的期刊主要有Journal of Mountain Ecology（義大利）、Mountain Geologist（美國）、Mountain Research and Development（瑞士）等，其中被SCI收錄的期刊僅有4種。《山地科學學報（英文版）》有關高山特別是喜馬拉雅地區的研究在國際山地科學研究界引起了廣泛的關注。
《山地科學學報（英文）》主要發表在自然條件和人類活動影響下山地環境演變與可持續發展的研究論文和知名專家的綜述性文章，選題範圍主要包括應對氣候變化背景下的山地科學研究、山地環境演變及其與人類活動的關係，山地生態系統退化與修復，以土石流、滑坡、土壤侵蝕為重點的山地災害的動力過程及防治理論和技術，山區流域管理與開發治理，山區特色資源保護和開發，山區文化多樣性和民族經濟發展，山區少數民族問題與居民福利等。
