《大學的理念（中文導讀插圖版）》幾乎涵蓋了紐曼所有有關大學的哲學思考，其中提出了很多在當時的歐洲高等教育中所面臨的重大問題，比如宗教在大學中的地位、大學中的道德觀、人文教育與職業教育的衝突、學術社區的特徵、文學的文化作用以及宗教與科學的關係等等。但就歷史背景而言，紐曼及其大學教育觀的出現不是偶然的。
作者簡介
約翰-亨利·紐曼(John Henry Newman,1801-1890)，19世紀英國著名的教育家、文學家、語言學家和神學家。紐曼出生於一個溫和的新教聖公會家庭。1817年6月進入牛津大學三一學院，1820年取得學士學位，並在兩年後成為牛津大學奧列爾學院的特別研究員。紐曼在1824年被授予英國國教會的聖職，此間出版10卷布道集。紐曼學識淵博，著述豐富，《大學的理念》是他最重要也是最有影響力的代表作。
