競賽目標
就全球可持續發展所面臨的挑戰，激發學生的興趣和意識；培養學生的科技創新能力；幫助學生把握相關議題；探尋解決問題的可行性方案；引起青少年關注；加快世界可持續發展進程。
主辦組織
宇宙基金會（Cosmos Foundation）是航天基金會（Space Foundation）全資開設的致力於以可持續發展教育與航天航空教育為主的青少年科學技術教育機構。美國國家航空航天局（National Aeronautics and Space Administration）是美國負責太空計畫的政府機構。

參加途徑
報名時為高年級（即9—12年級的初三、高一、高二、高三學生），並擁有獨立科學研究成果的學生可以參加中國區選拔。國內選拔參賽者需要完成網上材料投遞申報。國際決賽參賽者需要完成基礎申報、安全性檢查申報、人類倫理審查申報、研究無虐待動物審查申報、指導教師責任申報、成人項目監督者責任申報等網路申報程式。集體項目參賽人數為兩人（實際上最多有三人能夠獲獎，第3人需要自己承擔全部比賽費用），個人項目參賽人數為一人，每個項目（包括個人項目與集體項目）的指導教師為一人。
中國區選拔已將國內主要的青少年科學競賽作為聯繫賽事（分別是英特爾全國青少年科技創新大賽、明天小小科學家獎勵活動等）。同時每年十一月舉辦中國區選拔。經過中國區選拔的參賽項目將上報國際競賽委員會複審，國際複審通過後即可辦理簽證，在獲得簽證並簽訂採訪許可、肖像權使用許可、參賽協定之後即可赴美參加國際決賽。
參賽項目
能源
包括可再生能源研究、生物能源研究、不可再生能源研究、能源政策研究、清潔能源技術研發、能源效率研究、能源節約技術研發等。
工程
包括生物工程研究、土木工程研究、機械工程研究、工業工程研究、材料工程研究、電氣工程研究、計算機工程研究等。
環境
包括土地管理研究、生態系統管理研究、生物修復技術研發、空氣污染對策研究及空氣品質研究、土壤污染對策研究及土地質量研究、水污染對策研究及水質量研究、減少-回收-再利用3R研究。
中國參賽情況
2008年9月，中國科學技術協會青少年科技活動中心接到I-SWEEEP組委會的組隊參賽邀請。
2009年4月，中國科學技術協會青少年科技活動中心指派上海科協青少年科技活動中心組隊參加2009年國際可持續發展項目奧林匹克競賽（2009I-SWEEEP）。

評審均由國際學術界領導者（諾貝爾獎等獲得者）、工程界專家及著名科學家擔任。
