人物生平
生於密執安州馬斯基根城。他的父母在巡迴綜藝劇團當藝人，所以五歲就登台。從雷賓納中學畢業後，1942年服役。戰後為廣播電台撰寫西部喜劇的廣播劇本，不久就轉入電視台，受到約翰韋恩的賞識，到約翰韋恩的獨立製片公司替派特貝德克導演的《Seven Meb from Now》（1956）寫劇本。其後轉入華納公司負責編劇又為派特貝德克導演的《The Tall T》（1957）、《Kide Lonesome》（1959）、《Comanch Station》（1969）等三部影片寫劇本。1961年他導演第一部劇情長片《The Canadians》。其後有一段時間，他的作品幾乎清一色是西部片，其中《勇士們》很受重視。自1967年《匹馬單槍》後，則以諷刺和輕鬆的居多。
