生物史上第一例心臟移植，在1905年由亞力克西斯·卡雷爾醫生完成。
他將一隻小型犬的心臟移植到了一隻大狗的頸部，並讓那顆心臟在新移植的部位跳動了兩小時之久。
不過比起器官移植，他後期對器官培養的興趣更大。
他曾經讓一塊雞胚胎的心臟細胞成功存活了數十年，並試圖以此為原點，破解人類衰老的謎團。卡雷爾醫生相信，人體所有的細胞都具有永生的能力，只要給予適合的生長環境和營養成分，它們就能不斷分裂和增殖下去，實現生物意義上的“永生”。他的研究被記者們冠以“尋找不老泉”的美譽，獲得了大量關注。
卡雷爾醫生在1944年去世，而那些細胞甚至比卡雷爾本人晚了2年才死。這塊雞心細胞最終“逝世”於1946年，存活時間為34年，遠遠超過世界上任何一隻雞的壽命。
