Biodiesel（生物柴油）是由植物油、動物脂肪或回收餐飲廢油經酯交換反應製得的長鏈脂肪酸單烷基酯類可再生燃料，主要成分為脂肪酸甲酯（FAMEs）。其生產工藝包含甘油三酯與甲醇在催化劑作用下發生酯交換反應，經分離純化後獲得生物柴油，可單獨使用（B100）或與石化柴油混合（B20等），含氧量約10%，具有硫含量低、生物降解快等特點。質量控制指標涵蓋甘油殘留、甲醇含量等參數，需符合ASTM D6751、EN 14214等國際標準。
全球生物柴油生產原料呈現區域差異，歐盟以菜籽油為主，美國、巴西側重採用大豆油，馬來西亞推廣棕櫚基生物柴油，印尼通過提高摻混比例（B40）擴大棕櫚油使用。中國青島能源所開發絲狀微藻產油技術，培養的黃絲藻中性脂占比達80%，氣浮法採收率逾95%。生物柴油生產技術持續疊代，CaO基催化劑套用、脂肪酶化學修飾等技術提升轉化效率，第三代技術拓展至微生物油脂領域。全球產量2009年達1590萬噸，美歐煉油商加大可再生柴油生產投入。
