背景

起初，惠特尼並不想錄製這首歌，感覺這首歌沒什麼特別的信息來表達。然而，Arista唱片CEO Clive Davis堅信如果交由惠特尼錄製，這首歌會成為一首冠單，於是惠特尼同意了，這也成就了她美國連續七首冠軍單曲的紀錄。

由Peter Israelson執導，劇情是惠特尼與男友分手，想起了曾經的美好回憶。問著自己題目的問題： "where do broken hearts go?" 最後，小兩口複合了。惠特尼在八十年代的成功打破了對黑人的種族隔閡，但這MV是有爭議的，她被批"selling out" 和"acting white". 當"Where Do Broken Hearts Go" 被1989 年Soul Train Music Awards提名的時候，一名most-black的觀眾表示了嘲笑。（靈魂列車獎是黑人音樂的頒獎禮）
