To stimulate the enthusiasm and creativeness of scientists, to acelerate thedevelopment of science, and to promote modernization construction in China. theNatural Science Prizes were established by the State according to the“Regulationson National Natural Science Prizes of the P. R. C”.Since 1987, National Natural Science Prizes have been awarded every two yearsand the Seventh National Natural Science Prizes were adjudicated in China in 1995.Fifty-seven projects of excellent scientific achievements were awarded the prizes ●which were nominated by the National Natural Science Award Committee and ap-proved by the State Science and Technology Commission. the People's Republic ofChina. Among the 57 projects. 15 are in the second class. 27 in the third. and 15 inthe fourth.Practice indicates that basic research and applied busic research are the founda-tion of scientific discovery . the backing of new technological invention, the forerun-ner of breakthrough in high technology and the way for training qualified scientists.The scientific achieverments which were awarded the Seventh National NaturalScience Prizes resulted from the sustainable efforts and the courage in innovation ofthe Chinese scientists in their scientifie research in the fields of basic and applied ba-sic researches.
