歌曲評論

Never mind that Richard Marx's cool meter is hovering around the same level as Michael Bolton's just now. The man knows what he's good at--that would be syrupy, rock-tinged power ballads--and, as evidenced by My Own Best Enemy, he's sticking to it. Here he grinds his sandpapery voice forcefully into the groove of a dozen songs designed to stoke or soothe mushy-hearted sensibilities. Lyrics, accordingly, are Lifetime movie-ready: He's discovering all that he is on "Again"; wallowing over who will dry his tears, hold his hand, etc., on "When You're Gone"; and sharing secrets as "deep as the ocean," his "truth laid open," on "Falling." The disc, it should be argued, matches Marx's work on early '90s hits like "Should've Known Better," and he's bound to find an appreciative audience among the throngs of lady worshippers who have been waiting for him to re-emerge. But his crime is being unfashionable, and for it he'll serve a sentence: As friendly as Enemy is to the ear, it won't earn him a new--and much-needed--generation of fans. --Tammy La Gorce
"His sound is fabulous and always will be"
Talk about a timeless singer/songwriter. Richard Marx has so much character to his voice and drama to his lyrics. Great clear pitch but with a rough and raspy texture that's irresistable. This one is a treat for Marx fans because it doesn't deviate from his extraordinary formula too much but just enough to make it very fresh and new. Fave track is #2! A sure fire radio friendly tune that I love. It's classic pop music at it's best.
Remember 1987? His self-titled cd still goes through rotations in my cd player. That cd was like a greatest hits: "Should've Known Better", "Don't Mean Nothing", "Endless Summer Nights", "Lonely Heart", "Hold on to the Nights" ........
"Days in Avalon" from a couple of years ago had a great duet with Alison Krauss, "Straight from My Heart" but it didn't leave "marx" so to speak. I liked it but I like this one better and I admit I like just about everything about his range of music.
I predict he doesn't disappoint those of us who have listened to his music forever and will gain some new fans with this new cd.
"Not What I Expected, But Everything I Hoped For"
As an individual who would not consider myself much of a "Marxist", I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised with this album. It is a wonderfully eclectic blend of sounds old and new infused with some of the best lyrics I have heard in a long time. An album enveloped with heart and soul; I was unsure I would come across such a novelty ever again. In many ways "My Own Best Enemy" is an anomaly both for Marx and for pop music today, which perhaps best serves to explain the basis of its appeal. This album is quite simply a breath of fresh air in an industry cloaked in the thick smog of sex over substance. Nice work Mr. Marx. You may make a "Marxist" of me yet.
"My Own Best Enemy"
"My Own Best Enemy," is a fabulous CD!!! I am thrilled that Richard came back!! I've waited so long for him to come out with another CD. I have been a huge Richard Marx fan for a very long time and I have his entire collection of CD's. I never stopped believing in him and his talent. I bought,"My Own Best Enemy," and I found myself weeping in the car while listening to it. It is so pure and beautiful. His voice, the words and music touch your heart and soul. Very little music in the past years have brought tears to my eyes, but this CD did. Now I listen to it over and over. I bought an extra copy so I have one for home and one for the office. I'll need one more for my car. I brought it to work and found others saying, "Who is that singing?" His voice so soft and pure and the music is wonderful. I don't know anyone that has his song writing ability. It thrilled me to see that he worked with Keith Urban on one song on this CD called, "When You're Gone." Great song!! I noticed on the credit section of the CD where Richard Marx wrote a note to Keith Urban saying, "You're so talented, it's entirely unfair." Well Richard Marx, if you're reading this, You are also so talented, it's entirely unfair.":-)Don't ever underestimate the God given talent you have been given. It is precious beyond words and I look forward to another great CD and live performance soon!!
