繼上張專輯《Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me》大獲成功後，The Cure 又在1989年推出一張大熱門專輯《Disintegration》。《Disintegration》同時也是 Robert Smith“悲情三部曲”的第二部，顯得黑暗誘人，帶著神秘和憂鬱，整張專輯有著催眠曲一樣的感覺，沒有了樂隊以前的黑暗絕望的作風，儘管專輯的基調比以前更為憂鬱。The Cure 的音樂罕見的變得迷人了起來。好像在無垠的大海里，仰望夜空閃亮的星光，慢慢下沉，痛苦浸透，安詳地窒息。鋪天蓋地的深藍色鍵盤，孤寂而燦爛的吉他，黑暗中幻化出彩色光芒的貝司，沉穩壓抑而華麗眩目的鼓，還有 Robert Smith 悽美冷艷的歌聲。
專輯取得了英國榜第3和美國榜第14的佳績，並誕生了兩首大熱門單曲 “Lullaby” 和 “Lovesong” 。還有《Prayers for Rain》和長達九分多鐘《The Same Deep Water as You》等優美歌曲，《Disintegration》是The Cure在商業上的重大突破，成為The Cure在70～80年代最暢銷的專輯。因為專輯出色的商業成績，在之後的世界巡迴演出中，The Cure第一次在能容納數萬觀眾的室外大型體育場上為樂迷表演。
這張專輯在滾石雜誌選出的500張歷代最強專輯中排名第326位。
