Joan Rivers

Arguably no female comedian since Lucille Ball had a greater impact on popular culture than Joan Rivers. Unlike Ball, who got her start in movies, Rivers made her initial impact in nightclubs in the 1950s and ‘60s, when the stand-up scene was almost entirely off-limits to women. She would end up fighting against institutional sexism in the comedy world for the rest of her career and challenge convention by being intentionally outrageous and tackling taboo subjects. Rivers appeared frequently on the landmark US comedy programme The Tonight Show until Johnny Carson banned her for launching her own late-night comedy show – the first ever hosted by a woman – on the rival Fox network. She continued touring, as well as anchoring the TV network E’s red carpet coverage, until nearly the end – and the new Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon finally welcomed her back to the programme on 17 February. She died on 4 September aged 81, after complications from surgery.

瓊里弗斯從1965年上了知名深夜主持人約翰尼·卡森的“今夜秀”（The Tonight Show）開始嶄露頭角。於節目中以獨特的喜劇風格、取笑自己和名人的內容一炮而紅，後來多次代班主持的收視率有幾集甚至超過卡森。而當年美國幾乎全由男性統治的獨角喜劇，瓊‧瑞佛斯堪稱開路先鋒，並在1980年代與國家廣播公司簽下她為卡森休假期間唯一的代班主持人。之後福斯電視台在1986年挖角她，開了“瓊瑞佛斯的深夜秀”（The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers），成為在主要電視頻道上第一位有自己脫口秀節目的女性。但此舉卻讓她與恩師尼卡森打對台，而且播出不到1年，收視率暴跌，福斯開除她和她的丈夫兼該節目製作人Edgar Rosenberg，隔年羅森柏格患抑鬱自殺身亡，瓊瑞佛斯歸咎於他受到福斯電視台的“羞辱”。於是在1989年瓊瑞佛斯減低麻辣黃腔，改為電視談話節目“瓊里弗斯秀”（The Joan Rivers Show），但風趣不減，播了5年（1989-1993），為她贏得第17屆日間艾美獎最佳脫口秀主持人。並與女兒梅莉莎聯手主持E!娛樂電視頻道各頒獎典禮前的現場節目－“紅地毯秀”（The Red Carpet）。

後來在E!頻道主持“時尚警察”（Fashion Police），可說是開創了名人紅毯訪談的新風格，一句“Who are you wearing”成了招牌用語，眾多大明星的造型都得接受她的嚴格檢視。而她的女兒 Melissa 多年來和媽媽一同進行時尚評論工作，母女兩人可說是都擁有超“敢言”的特質。她以麻辣又風趣的侮辱式評論明星們的衣著炒熱節目，使之成為該頻道第三高收視率的節目。另外，在2013年3月於YouTube上推出個人每周線上脫口秀視頻節目“上床與瓊聊天”（In Bed with Joan），每周她在自己的臥室里，訪談不同名人來賓。在她過世前幾周，瓊瑞佛斯還進棚錄製一集關於第66屆艾美獎頒獎和2014MTV獎的“時尚員警”，是她最後一次在電視露臉；在她進醫院做喉嚨治療的前一天，她還發表最新一集的“上床與瓊聊天”，訪問黎安·萊姆絲及艾迪·斯比安夫妻倆。
