在1530年,德國人魯多爾夫在計算+ 的時候,以計算得 ,到後來才逐漸的採用現在的分數形式。1845年,德摩根在他的一篇文章「函式計算」( The Calculus of Functions)中提出以斜線「/」來表示 分數線。由於把分數以a/b來表示,有利於印刷排版,故現在有些印刷書籍也有採用這種 斜線「/」分數符號。
