Anostostoma australasiae別名：巨型王蟋蟀，它們屬於沙螽總科的醜螽族，所以在當地也被叫做：澳洲醜螽，該屬成員目前總共有5個品種，棲息在整個昆士蘭東南部和新南威爾斯東北部的熱帶雨林中，因此大量落葉及腐爛的木材為這些驚人的昆蟲提供了良好住所。
它們是直翅目的一員，與紐西蘭的巨型沙螽有密切關係，雄蟲體長約70-80mm，雌蟲60-70mm，生活在土壤中的洞穴，雄性擁有巨大的頭部及可長達22mm強而有力的下頜骨，雌性帶有彎曲的產卵器，可以刺入土壤產卵，它們晝伏夜出，飲食多樣化，你可以在潮濕的夜晚看到它們在覓食掉落的水果、菌類及捕捉其他昆蟲，它們在受打擾的時候發出的嘶嘶聲叫做“摩擦音”，是昆蟲用後腿內側摩擦其腹部上脊柱時發出的。
