《酷美語》完全採用對話體，像系列情景劇和充滿懸念的電影劇本。作者將美國校園、家庭、社會等日常生活中大量俚語、諺語、諧語等（統稱為“酷語”），像調料一樣拋灑在內並一一羅列注釋，因而讀之津津有味，還在不知不覺中提升了實用技巧。
兩本書都涉及到當代美國文化的諸多方面——其中充滿了大量很“酷”的美式習慣用語。而且，兩本書存在著某種程度的聯繫。儘管第一冊中的幾個場景顯得有些鬆散游離，但一些人物和人物關係重新出現在第二冊中(迭宕起伏的情節演繹遲早會將其一網打盡)。第二冊中，將一系列的場景有機置入一個完整、引人入勝的故事——以電影劇本為藍本的偵探小說中——有開端、發展、矛盾、高潮和結局；故事情節由一個個場景的變換而被推著走。所以，這個故事完全不象那些場景互不關聯的“場景英語”或“情景英語”，結局彼此割裂而乏味。
作為一名作家和專業電台主持人，諾曼·格里蘭先生對“酷”的美式英語非常熟捻，同時擁有一付專業性的嗓音。所以本書配上了CD，他和他的同事們在裡面扮演了不同的角色。同時還採用了特技配音作為背景，在欣賞故事的同時，也可以提升發音和聽力。
作者介紹
諾曼·格里蘭（Norman Gilliland）
“五月花號”新教徒愛德華·富勒的第12代孫，生長於佛羅里達州甘斯維爾，獲佛州大學英美文學和傳播學雙碩士學位。諾曼在佛州“WRUF-FM”和“WUFT-FM”電台開始其主持人和製作人生涯，1983年起，一直供職於威斯康星州公共電台。他已有三部作品出版：長篇小說《沙地大廈》、《棕櫚街謀殺案》和隨筆集《雅致音符》。其中《雅致音符》在中國有兩個譯本（中英文對照版《音樂啟蒙書》·四卷/07年4月中央編譯出版社，中文版《音樂的希望》/08年3月北大出版社）。他和他的妻子Amanda有兩個兒子，現居威斯康星州。
李波
作家、翻譯。祖籍山西，60年代末生於四川。主要作品：譯著中英文對照版《音樂啟蒙書》·四卷/07年4月中央編譯出版社，中文版《音樂的希望》/08年3月北大出版社等；自著：長篇小說《美國處男》（06年1月知識出版社）、《回頭無岸》（02年中國電影出版社）、文化評論《口腔里的中國人》（07年2月東方出版中心）、《吃垮中國——口腔文化的宿命》（修訂版 05年1月光明日報出版社）、雜文集《狗眼看世界》（05年4月中國友誼出版公司）等。2007年起和妻子Kimberley居美國威斯康星州。
