本書為大學英語寫作教程系列叢書之一。本系列叢書中已經出版的《英語十句作文法》、《英語五段作文法》和《英語段落作文法》深受廣大讀者的青睞。本書與前幾本書的不同點在於:它著力於從語言上（前幾本書主要從結構、技巧上）提高學生的寫作水平。全書模仿四、六級考試的翻譯題命題法——以原版書刊上摘錄文章的段落為主要材料，然後挖去部分句子、從句或短語，要求學生根據所給的漢語譯文翻譯去完成英語原文句子。通過這種回譯法以提高學生的語言表達能力，使學生的英語語言表達更地道、更規範、更生動。
