溫妮莎的雙親都是音樂老師，在他們的薰陶下她從小就開始唱歌跳舞。在簽署高中年鑑時，她寫道希望自己有一天能登上百老匯的舞台。在拿到義大利一所大學的獎學金後，她嘗試著進入了紐約的娛樂界。她參加了幾個選美比賽，在1984年作為第一位非裔女性贏得了美國小姐，得獎後由於捲入緋聞歸還了美國小姐的桂冠。後來溫妮莎錄製了幾張專輯，在音樂界取得了成功，並且還出現在幾部電影中，還實現了高中時的夢想--在百老匯演出了《拜訪森林》。
