學術成就

自1992年起,在甘肅陸續進行了5個夏季的野外發掘工作。研究命名了三屬新恐龍:馬鬃龍,戈壁巨龍和黎明角龍。在全面總結馬鬃山恐龍組合基礎上,提出它代表了東亞早白堊世鸚鵡嘴龍恐龍動物群進化的一個新階段。馬鬃山恐龍組合的各分子都較遼西熱河生物群中的相關分子進步。同時,根據對馬鬃山新發現的角龍類和鴨嘴龍類恐龍系統發育關係的研究表明東亞是這兩類恐龍的發源地。
鸚鵡嘴龍類為東亞早白堊世所特有。研究了遼西義縣組陸家屯層中的鸚鵡嘴龍類化石,根據其頭骨特徵確定為一幼年個體並代表鸚鵡嘴龍類一新屬,紅山龍。隨後又研究了紅山龍一成年個體頭骨,發現許多與個體發育相關的特徵變化,為進一步研究鸚鵡嘴龍類的系統發育關係提供了新了依據。
新角龍類是白堊紀陸地生態系統中僅次於鴨嘴龍類的一類植食性恐龍,而基幹新角龍類主要發現於亞洲的白堊紀。申請人對甘肅、內蒙古、遼西和北美發現的基幹新角龍類做了較系統的研究。在分支系統學分析基礎之上,發現北美已知新角龍類自成一單系類群,是亞洲原角龍科的姊妹群,而它們的共同祖先則在亞洲的早白堊世。這一發現也對新角龍類的古地理遷徙做出了最簡約的解釋,即它們起源於亞洲,而其中一支遷徙到北美後再也沒有返回。
恐龍包括鳥臀類和蜥臀類兩大類。鳥臀類恐龍又包括了劍龍、甲龍、腫頭龍、角龍和鴨嘴龍等類群。而鴨嘴龍是其中最為繁盛的一支,是晚白堊世陸地生態系統中最主要的植食者。對它的起源和早期進化的研究一直是恐龍研究中的熱點。主要基於對發現於中國西北馬鬃山和蘭州盆地新材料的研究,並結合對全球主要代表分子的對比,通過分支系統學分析發現早期鴨嘴龍及其近親主要發現於東亞。因此,鴨嘴龍類恐龍很可能起源於東亞的白堊紀。
最早的鳥類發現於晚侏羅世,而其第一次輻射發生在早白堊世。這時的鳥以反鳥類為主,已被發現於我國遼西熱河生物群中的大量化石所證明。而今鳥類(包括現生鳥類)也起源於白堊紀,但其化石材料較反鳥類極為稀少。因此,對今鳥類的起源和早期演化的研究是當今國際科學界一直關注的重大科學問題之一。
2006年6月16日,美國《科學》雜誌發表題為《中國西北早白堊世兩棲型今鳥類化石》的文章,是這一研究領域中取得的一次重大進展。通過對近兩年來發現於我國甘肅省酒泉地區昌馬盆地早白堊世地層中保存的大量精美甘肅鳥化石的研究發現:1)甘肅鳥是已知最早的今鳥類化石;2)以甘肅鳥為主的鳥化石群是已知最早的今鳥類主導的鳥化石群;3)現生鳥類很可能起源於水棲生境。2006年6月16日,美國《科學》雜誌發表了這一成果。
