《學習者策略教師指南》共分六章。第一章首先定義學習者策略的意義，然後介紹學習者策略的類型，以及這些策略對語言學習的作用。定義學習者策略可以有多種角度：從使用學習者策略之後帶來的好處看學習者策略；從使用學習者策略之後產生的行為變化看學習者策略；從對學習者策略的認識看學習者策略。學習中有三大類策略對學習十分重要：認知策略、元認知策略和社會/情感策略。
第二章說明課程中關注策略的原因：使用學習者策略可以提高學習的效果和效率；使用學習者策略還可以提高學習者的學習動機，增加其練習語言的時間，使其最終成為獨立的學習者。
第三章介紹將策略融入課程教學的三種方式：一、集中式策略培訓，即集中一段時間專門培訓策略，如一個月、一個學期等等；二、融入式策略培訓，即把培訓滲透到日常教學中；三、輔助式策略培訓，即將策略培訓放在學習任務後，通過反思策略的運用，提高策略意識，進而提高策略使用水平。本章還涉及到策略培訓的規劃、監控和評估的問題。
