The Listening and Speaking series promotes thedevelopment of listening skills in conjunction withspeaking skills. Students who use this course willhave many opportunities in each unit to reflect onthe topics presented and voice their own opinionsas well as talk about their own experiences in rela-tion to the topics. This connection allows studentsto achieve a deeper level of comprehension of thematerial they are learning. It also recreates thereal-world environment in which listening andspeaking roles alternate continuously.The recordings used in Listening and Speaking 2 arebased on authentic conversations recorded withboth native and non-native speakers of English,and as such reflect a variety of speaker styles andperspectives. Authentic materials are an importantresource for learning to listen in a second lan-guage. At first, authentic listening may seem toochallenging because of the irregularity of level, theunpredictability of the content, and the accents ofthe speakers. Vocabulary choices are often idio-syncratic because vocabulary choice depends onthe experiences, interests, and style of the speaker.Colloquial vocabulary choice may be differentfrom the "textbook English" that most studentshave studied in school.
Speaking style also presents an initial chal-lenge for learners. In spontaneous conversationsspeakers may repeat themselves or begin speakingand then change what they were about to say.They may not complete sentences or use correctwritten grammar. To provide learners with realisticlistening experiences, the recordings in this courseattempt to capture some of these qualities ofauthentic conversation. The material has beenmodified to provide just enough challenge todevelop the students' listening skills without cre-ating the anxiety and frustration students mayexperience with some authentic language encoun-ters.

《大學體驗英語》系列教材依據《大學英語教學大綱》[修訂本]編寫，供大學英語教學基礎階段使用。《大學體驗英語》參照《大學英語教學大綱》對各級的要求，分為1～6級。每級由《綜合教程》、《擴展教程》、((聽說教程》以及配套的教學參考書、多媒體學習課件、網路課程以及電子教案等組成。此外，還編寫了《大學體驗英語——基礎教程》一冊，供入學水平低於第一級起點要求的學生使用。
《大學體驗英語》充分研究了國內外各教育層次的英語教材的編寫原則與特點，既吸納了國內教材注重思想性、人文性、科學性以及注重打好語言基礎等優點，又注入了國外社區教育、大眾教育、終身教育的實用、套用型教學的特點；既注意打好語言基礎，更側重培養套用能力，特別是實際使用英語進行涉外交際的能力。在培養閱讀能力的同時，加強聽、說、寫、譯等語言技能的綜合訓練，尤其注重口頭和書面實用表達能力的訓練與培養，以適應中國入世以後對外交往的需要。在上述總體思路的指導下，更新教學理念和內容體系，這主要體現在如下幾個方面：
1．注重培養表達能力。《大學體驗英語》不僅重視語言技能的訓練，更注重這些技能的實際運用。以任務為主線進行教材的編排，使課文和練習成為一個有機的整體，有利於培養學生實際使用英語進行涉外交際的能力。

3．課堂教學和自主學習相結合。《大學體驗英語》充分注意課堂教學與課外自主學習相結合，使課堂教學的內容在課外得以延展。《大學體驗英語》的《綜合教程》(Integrated Book)和《聽說教程》(Listerling and Speaking)主要用於課堂教學，《擴展教程》(Exte rlded Book)供學生自主學習使用。二者緊密配合，相輔相成。
