個人經歷
早年曾到台灣和日本進修。一九七二年獲荷蘭萊登大學漢學博士學位。一九八六年獲歷史學博士學位，論文為《Strange company : Chinese settlers, Mesitzo women and Dutch in VOC Batavia》。一九七二年至一九七五年在日本京都大學人文科學學院擔任研究員。一九七五年至一九七七年任萊登大學印度尼西亞研究計畫主任。從一九七七年起在萊登大學歷史系任教，現為該系教授。主講《歐洲與亞洲關係史》，同時也兼任萊登大學歐洲擴張史研究中心主任和荷蘭國際亞洲研究中心主任等職。一九九一年至一九九二年獲美國富布萊獎學金前往普林斯頓大學擔任訪問教授。包教授通曉英文、中文、日文、印尼文、荷蘭文和多種歐洲語文。
