教育、工作經歷
出生在雲南省麗江縣大研鎮，就讀於大研鎮大佛寺國小、麗江一中。1982年由曲靖一中考入北京大學，1986年北京大學地球物理系天體物理專業本科畢業，獲理學學士學位，同年進入中國科學院北京天文台攻讀博士學位。1989年赴德國慕尼黑歐洲南半球天文台學習，1992年完成博士學位論文回國答辯，獲理學博士學位。1993年赴英國倫敦大學學院（UCL）物理天文系從事光致電離氣體星雲領域研究。1999年成為該系Senior Research Fellow，同年獲中國國家自然科學基金委員會海外、香港青年學者合作研究基金（國家傑出青年科學基金B類資助項目）資助。1999年入選教育部第二批長江學者獎勵計畫、受聘北京大學天文學系長江學者特聘教授、博士生導師。2003年獲國家自然科學基金委員會傑出青年科學基金（傑青A類資助項目）資助。2006年參與組建”北京大學科維理天文與天體物理研究所”，先後擔任副所長（2007-2011）、代理所長（2012-2013）。2012年8月在北京召開的國際天文學聯合會（IAU）第28屆大會上當選為國際天文學聯合會副主席。2014年11月當選中國天文學會副理事長。2014-2018年作為首席科學家主持科技部“國家重點基礎研究發展計畫”（973計畫）項目“基於LAMOST大科學裝置的銀河系研究及多波段天體證認”。享受國務院政府特殊津貼。2017年9月受聘雲南大學教授，擔任雲南大學中國西南天文研究所所長。2018年入選雲南省科技領軍人才。
主講本科生專業基礎課“天體光譜學”、研究生專業主幹課“星際介質物理學”。培養了一批博士研究生和博士後。

研究領域
主要從事觀測天文學方面的研究工作，在光致電離氣體星雲（行星狀星雲、電離氫區）的深度分光觀測，大天區面積、大視場、大樣本高精度天體測光和分光巡天，銀河系消光、星族結構、化學動力學性質等領域的研究取得系列成果，多次受邀在國際學術會議上作特邀綜述報告。
