隱士長沮、桀溺兩個人在地里耕作時，孔子師徒一行正路過此地，孔子讓子路前去問路。

長沮問子路：“車裡的那個人是誰呀？”子路說：“是孔丘。”長沮說：“是魯國的那個孔丘嗎？”子路說：“是的。”長沮說：“他應該知道路在哪裡了。”

子路又去問桀溺。桀溺說：“你是誰呀？”子路說：“我是仲由。”桀溺說：“是魯國的那個仲由嗎？”子路說：“是的。”桀溺說：“天下已經亂得好像滔滔的洪水，到處都是這樣了，誰又能改變得了？你與其跟著孔丘那樣的人東躲西藏，還不如像我們這樣避世隱居呢！”說完就繼續耕作。

子路回來告訴了孔子。孔子傷心的說：“我們不是鳥獸，不和天下人在一起又何誰在一起呢？天下如果有道，我也就用不著來改變它了。”
